I am inclined to think the ghosts were there. The governess' description of Quint was very accurate. She never saw him or seen any pictures of him. The way Miles called her "my dear" was most inappropriate. It was as if Quint spoke to her. Also, both children played a trick on her so that Flora could sneak off to be with Miss Jessel by the lake. Miss Jessel took Flora in the boat because she could not row it herself.

The way the children behaved with the governess was very strange. The governess says the children appeared so good, yet they played tricks on her and ran rings round her.

I love Asner's reading, but I hate the abridgment. Especially when another reader comes on to sum up sections of the book that have been cut, it's just clunky. Really wish there was an unabridged (or less abridged) recording of Ed Asner reading this.

Living in Costa Rica years ago, in an open space I saw a small, unobtrusive metal statue of Anne Frank where passersby incorporate her into their daily lives. It really stands out. Everything has energy. Her remarkable words are engraved on the base. "People are good."

Forty years ago I was acquainted with a man who invaded the USSR with the Hungarian army. He was captured by the Red Army and invaded Germany with the Red Army. After the war was over he joined the French Foreign Legion and fought in Indo China. After the French surrender he fought in Algeria. In 1961 he was a bit player in the Foreign Legions mutiny against Degaull. He liked to show pictures of himself in uniform with his camel.

I met a Hungarian guy who invaded the USSR with the Germans, was wounded three times, and was recovering in a Whermacht field hospital when Hungary switched sides. The Military Police came on in and rounded up all the Hungarians; and he ended the war in a German POW camp after fighting nearly 4 years alongside Germany.

I was fasting, to protest utter neglect of ideas that could be the basis of a sustainable and more just civilization. Someone reported me to authorities as being a danger to myself. I was taken against my will to a psychiatric ward, and soon threatened with being force-fed and subjected to ECT. I buckled under that pressure, after hearing a Court confirm that authority stood behind the threat. While locked up in the following week, I sought advice from a friend about what I should read. He speaks Old English, so I asked specifically about Chaucer. He recommended the "Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale" (and a couple of other tales). I read 'The Wife of Bath's Tale' aloud to my 'cellmate'. I started crying when the Old Woman was asking for the origin of the distinction between gentlemen and commoner, given that we are all descended from the same Adam. (This exact point seems to be omitted from this reading.) When John Ball asked that question at about the time that these stories were assembled, he soon lost his head. (Also omitted: The old woman promised that she would appear to others as an old, ugly woman, so that, if he leaves the house, he need not worry whether she will remain faithful if some traveler happens by. She touches on this point here, by pointing out that, if she is beautiful, he will be seeing people come to visit *because* they want to see her.)
